Me inspire someone? I'm speechless!

My very talented friend, Bob (who I just love to pieces, btw), is teaching himself how to paint in photoshop and his very first attempt was inspired by my blog!  How cool is that?!?!  I feel so honored!!  It is also his one and only pin on Pinterest which makes me feel even more special than I did just by snagging his very first photoshop-painted art!

And just so you don't think I'm making this up...Bob's exact words:  "I'm teaching myself how to paint in photoshop ... this is my first attempt and is inspired by highheelshardhats..."  (yay!!)

So it pretty much goes without saying that I had to share it on my blog....since I inspired it and all - in case you didn't catch that before!  (Sorry...I just don't think I've ever inspired anyone before so I'm going to eat this up!!)

And with no further ado....

Bob's art inspired by my blog!!
Pretty great, right?  I love the pink hard hat too - I need to get me one of those for work ASAP.  (I know...shocker that I don't own one already!)  Awesome job, Bob - hard to believe this is your first attempt!  What it would be like to be so artistic, I will never know...

Thanks for making me feel so special, Bob!!!

Friday Addictions!

Happy Friday, everyone!  As usual, I'm super motivated this morning [inject sarcasm] and so I wanted to squeeze in a quick post to further distract myself from my super productive morning.

If you remember, I gave up my oh-so-cherished vanilla chais for Lent...(see "Good bye, Vanilla Chai. Hello, Lent." post from March 1st).  So this morning as I was driving to work really really really craving one [note: this actually happens every single morning], I started thinking to myself just how many things I am addicted to at the moment.  Now, I use the words "addicted to" lightly...most of these things I could give up and only miss a few beats in my normally-upbeat ways, but others (like my vanilla chai, for example) would really dampen my spirits...like a LOT!

So, with that, my current addictions (in no particular order):

1. Of course, my oh-so-cherished vanilla chai...which, btw, I think Starbucks would be totally legit if they added those exact adjectives to the name!  Only 9 more days...

2.  Pinterest!  Why oh why do I love this site so much?  I seriously have 3 different DIY projects in progress at this very moment...this is becoming a very expensive addiction!

3. Fave REDs Starburst Jellybeans!  Oh my goodness, I can't even tell you how good these are!  You can only buy them around Easter and every year I get sucked into Target's "2 for $5" sale.  (I mean what a deal, right!?)  I accidentally polished off 5 bags (by myself) in about 2-ish weeks this year...and it isn't even Easter yet.  Oops!

4.  Duchess of Cambridge!  I just **LOVE** Catherine Middleton's style!  I wish I had a brand new wardrobe so I could dress just like her everyday...crazy hats and all!!

5.  Facebook on my phone!  I don't know what it is, but I swear I have to check FB on my phone every free second I get...it's ridiculous!

6.  Baby Nurseries!  NO...I am not pregnant (first of all), but I have this crazy desire [read: downright obsession, if we are being honest here] to search for baby nursery ideas so that the day it happens I will have it all planned out already and will be able to start decorating ASAP!  Maybe it's that Type-A thing people talk about...

7.  Country Music!  Last, but not least, I just can't get enough of Kris Gordon, Lee Brice, Blake Shelton, Easton Corbin, Joe Nichols and Jake Owen...just to name a few!

And those are a few of my addictions at the moment.  Maybe (hopefully?) some of you can relate and I'm not all alone here!  Now to get back to work and stop thinking about these... (sigh)

Attention all City-Drivers!

Yep, you....
This post goes out to all of the city-drivers out there that have completely forgotten (or possibly just disregarded) the normal-society-accepted-rules of polite driving.  I'm not sure when or how this happened, but given that I have a hard time believing anybody would be rude to another person on purpose and I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, I am going to assume city-drivers were never taught, simply forgot or are not even aware that they are and/or have become a city-driver.

Thus, I have listed a few of the normal-society-accepted-rules of polite driving below to save these poor individuals from their aggressive, bad-mannered or just plain rude way of driving. [Or, more likely, attempt to save the few polite drivers left their sanity from the city-drivers or becoming a city driver themselves!]

  1. When another driver puts on their blinker to signal that they want to get over in your lane, do not speed up so they cannot get over.  Just simply let them in.
  2. When you are the driver that has just been "let in", wave to say thank you!
  3. As other drivers are entering the highway, move over to the middle or left lane to let them in giving them time and space to accelerate to the appropriate speed.
  4. If you are a slow driver (or at least driving slower than all of the other drivers around you), move over to the furthest right lane.
  5. Along the same lines as #4, do not cut someone off and then drive 15 mph under the speed limit.
  6. In back-to-back traffic, if a driver is waiting to enter into your lane from an intersection and you are already moving at a snails-pace and/or are at a dead-stop, be polite and let them in.  [Driver that was just let in, refer back to Rule #2.]
  7. When switching lanes always use your blinker.  It is not polite to weave in and out of traffic like a madman running from something.
  8. Last, but not least, remember the golden rule your mom taught you - treat others like you would like to be treated....this goes for driving as well!
Happy, polite, safe driving to all!!

SXSW & St. Patty's Day!

Holy cow!!  So many people!!!!  To say there were literally thousands of people just in the streets alone would be an understatement!!  To be honest, I'm surprised we braved the crowds, but since my newest favorite band, Kris Gordon, was playing and it was St. Patty's Day we figured we'd take our chances and head downtown to the center of one of the largest music festivals in the US!  And I'm so glad we did!  So.Much.Fun.

This pic really doesn't do it justice!
So, real quick, for those of you who have never heard of South by Southwest (SXSW, or "South by" as the locals call it).  It is a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every March in our good ol' town of Austin!  It lasts for almost 3 weeks, is absolutely huge - it was even on E! this year (very exciting!) - and it grows every year.   It is the highest revenue-producing event for Austin...estimated to bring in over $200 million this year alone!  Now just imagine how many people that would be in one downtown area all at once!!   Now combine St. Patty's Day with that crowd and...BOOM....you've got craziness!!!  OK...history lesson over!

As I mentioned above, we jumped into the snake pit to see Kris Gordon and the band play at Rebels which, lucky for us, is just 3 bars down from Boon's work parking garage where we have a free parking pass.   Wahoo - $30 parking avoided!!!  Now getting to the garage was a bit of a challenge, but we managed to dodge all of the pedicabs which seriously seemed to take over the streets and frogger-styled our way through traffic finally finding an open spot on the 5th level of the garage.  And with that we were on our way to have some fun!

Seriously, I had so much fun that night!!  With all of the SXSW people (mostly dressed in green) and the St. Patty's Day spirit [read: drunken craziness!], the crowd was insane and the band totally blew it out of the water!  My fellow groupies (Boon, Jud, and Joy) and I danced and sang the night away.   Well, to be honest, I'm a way better groupie than my other fellow groupies because I knew the words to every song so really just I was singing the night away....[and for those of you who know me, it really didn't matter that I knew the words or not - I would have been singing my little heart out no matter what making up my own words where needed]...but I'll give them credit for dancing the night away!!   Admittedly though, we did get out-groupied by one girl who actually had a legit Kris Gordon shirt on....ummm, where do we get ours?!?!

Ok...so now about Kris Gordon and the band!  The band consists of our good friend, Donny, the very talented lead guitarist who graduated high school with Boon.  He is one of the nicest people I know - would literally give you his shirt off his back!   (Super good dresser too...btw, ladies!)  Donny is really the only one we know so if I screw up the names of any of the other band members, I'm sorry! (I know that makes me a horrible groupie!)  The fiddle player (fiddlist? fiddler?) is Cody - he is amazing and so talented!  (And really has an awesome name!) The base guitarist, Johnny-B is Joy's and my favorite to watch - he is crazy and totally rocks it on stage!  The drummer, Caleb, kicks butt - he totally surprises the heck out of ya, but seriously wails on the drums!  And, finally, the main guy, Kris Gordon - his voice knocks your socks off!  He is a great entertainer...always engaging the crowd and every single song he sings is awesome.  I love all of their original songs, but like Boon said, even every single cover they play is right on!  They are a really great band all-around and I know they are going to hit it big one day so I'm going to enjoy all the free shows I can get before then.   (Click here to check out their website and some of their songs!)  Now some pics from the night...
The band!

Donny and Kris
Lots of dancing!
Johnny-B rocking out!

Cody kicking it on the fiddle!

Johnny-B again...see why we love watching him!!

Boon and I - Happy St. Patty's Day!
Jud & Joy - fellow groupies!
And that, my friends, is our SXSW-slash-St. Patty's Day night!  Good times!!!  Next year I might have to brave a few more SXSW shows (ahem, crowds)....

Renovation Realities!

Two weekends ago Boon and I (with the help of our trusty sidekicks, Bentley and sometimes Bella (once it got too dark to be outside)) decided to tackle our first real home renovation....and it was so exciting!!  We opted to test out our renovation-capabilities on our guest bathroom since it is the smallest renovation on our list of renovations that we want to do. That way if we totally messed it up, we could hire somebody to come bail us out and not totally break the bank.  Well, we are about 1/2 way through and so far so good - it even looks pretty dang really, really good (if I do say so myself!)

So it started out looking like this:
Guest Bathroom (before) - pretty hideous, right!?
A few of the things we hated: ugly light pine cabinets, horrible 1980 seashell sink (even though the house was built in 2000), stark white countertop, plain boring faucet, and the standard builder's mirror and light fixture.

We first tackled the ugly light pine cabinets (this was back in November or so).  We used the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation Kit - Glazed Espresso, which is supposed to be an easy 5-step process.  To our amazement, it actually turned out pretty good, but "easy" is not exactly the term I'd used to describe the 5-step process.  We actually did both bathrooms which was a total of about 6 doors and 6 drawers and it probably took us a good two weeks.  The first step, the "Deglosser" step, was excruciating...our arms and hands were probably sore for a week.  This step is supposed to eliminate sanding, but my heck, at that point I think it would have been easier to sand!  After the first step though it really wasn't that bad, just time consuming.  It was definitely cheaper than having the cabinets refinished or buying new cabinets though!  (Even considering the money we saved, we will hire someone to do our kitchen cabients - no way am I going through that again!)  So after the cabinet transformation our cabinets looked like this:
Cabinets after their transformation!  (Sorry the pic is kind of dark.)
Since we were so exhausted from that phase of our remodel we ended up waiting about 4 months to continue. So fast forward to about two weeks ago! In this phase, we replaced the horrible 1980 seashell sink, the stark white countertop, the plain boring faucet, and the standard builder's mirror and light fixture.

Our Remodeling Team:
First, we have Boon - the most creditable worker.  He did all the dirty work (i.e. unhooking and re-hooking the plumbing, electrical work, heavy lifting, etc.).  He stayed very busy and so I wasn't able to get a picture of his head...sorry about that!
Boon unhooking the original plumbing.  Notice Bentley coming to help!
Second, we have Bentley - our second biggest helper (next to me, of course!).  Bentley helped us throughout the whole project.  He thoroughly checked out everything we took apart or removed from the existing sink/countertop by sniffing it endlessly.  He made sure we installed all the new pieces correctly by watching diligently from the hallway or, more preferably, on the rug next to the shower - I'm pretty sure he felt more apart of the action when he was actually inside the bathroom with us.  He was also very legit at following me around to make sure I didn't get lost during one of my many trips to the garage or spare bedroom (where we had all of our tools set up).
Bentley helping Boon unhook the plumbing.
Third, we have Bella - unlike Bentley, she could careless what was going on in the bathroom and preferred to soak up some Vitamin D while working on her tan!  She literally spent all day outside until it got dark and we made her come in.  She then split her time evenly between her comfy bed in the hallway and hanging out with Bentley on the rug next to the shower.
Bella soaking up the sun!
And, last but not least, we have me - the brains [read: slave-driver] of the operation!  My job was to provide thorough (and always right) instructions, take pictures, provide my master-caulking skills, help with the heavy lifting, run back-and-forth to the garage and spare bedroom to fetch tools for Boon, check on our outdoor-furkid, Bella, and to approve all final work!  (PS - I had the best job!)   Oh...and I also re-caulked the shower just for something to do in between my other jobs...I'm a bit of a busy-body!)
Me demonstrating one of my many jobs!
So now that you know who the players are, I'll walk you through the rest of our remodel.  After we (yes, we) unhooked the plumbing and removed the ugly sink and countertop, we realized we were going to have to re-texture the back and side wall where the old backsplash and sidesplash were because the new backsplash and sidesplash were shorter.  Unforeseen Problem #1!
After removing the sink and coutertop.
After many tries, we finally figured out [read: settled on] our texturing job.  I wouldn't give us an A+ in this area, but we can't be great at everything, right!?  It works, and unless you look super close, I don't think it is very noticeable so I give us a passing score.  After letting the texture dry, we painted and were ready to move on!
Letting the texture dry so we can repaint and move-on!
Yay!!  We finally have a new countertop and new fixtures!!!  Now to re-hook up the plumbing...
Boon re-hooking up the plumbing.
So now that we figured out the texturing and have the new countertop on, we thought we were moving along effortlessly, until this little make-drain-work-thingamajig (see below) didn't make the drain work!  Argh!!  So apparently, this thing comes in one standard size, yet our standard drop-in sink/countertop did NOT take into account the standard size of the make-drain-work-thingamajig.  People!!!  Basically, our make-drain-work-thingamajig was too short for our set-up.  Unforeseen Problem #2
Unforeseen Problem #2: make-drain-work-thingamajig
Luckily, we are problem solvers and did not let this little issue stand in our way!  Boon, with the help of a second rod and a little duct tape, rigged up a little fix until we could get back to the hardware store for a more permanent fix.  And, just so you know, later on in the project we did fix this - we had to use a toilet-flusher-rod-thingamajig [note: it was new, and therefore, clean so no worries!] because they are longer, but coincidentally they are the same diameter so the little white ball still fit and it now works perfectly!  Phew!

So finally, with the new countertop in place and the new fixtures and plumbing all hooked-up, we have our first comparison photo!!
Comparison of old seashell sink and countertop to new awesome rectangular sink and granite countertop!
Now it's time to move to the builder's grade mirror and light fixture.  We ran into the same texturing problem with the mirror and the light fixture as we did with the backsplash and sidesplash, but again, not horribly noticeable unless you are looking for it.  So...if any of you come to our house...don't look for it!  :)   Our second comparison picture is below.  Ignore the burnt out light in the original photo - I didn't want to change the bulb since we were replacing the fixture anyway!
Comparison of old light fixture and mirror to new beautiful light fixture and mirror!
And with that, we have the final product!!  I took the picture in the dark to try and get the light fixture.  Are you ready???
Our new guest bathroom!!
And of course, I had to provide an overall comparison picture!  Whatdayathink?!?!
Old vs. New!
After the pictures above were taken we added hardware so I've included one more picture below.
Couldn't leave out the hardware!
Yay!!! Phase 1 of our Guest Bathroom Remodel is complete!!  (And, I only broke one nail in the process!  Whoop!)  Next, we will be re-tiling the tub surround...
Our next upgrade...stay tuned!
Stay tuned!  Until then...if you need any remodeling advice, Bentley is available for questions!  He's an expert now!

Saturday Fun!

Saturday was a good day!  We started off at the YTAC (Young Texans Against Cancer) Chili Cook-off.  Although we, Chili Con Carne-Val, didn't place [IMO: even though we had the best chili!], they had a GREAT turn-out and are expecting their profit to be at about $22,000 raised!!  Go, Austin!!

Besides just having fun, I also learned a few things:
  1. True "Texas" chili apparently doesn't have beans.  WHAT?!?!  The last time I ate chili without beans (before Saturday, of course) was on a chili-dog...the only time chili sans beans is allowed!
  2. No matter how cold the weatherman predicts the Texas weather to be, girls will still show up dressed like it is the middle of August [read: tiny shorts, bare midriffs, exposed cleavage, etc.]!  Lucky for them, however, the weatherman was completely wrong on Saturday.  Unlucky for me, I did not get the memo that we were dressing like it was August (see picture below)...aaannnnddddd the weatherman was wrong on Saturday.
  3. It only takes a few shots of chili [image builder: seriously, shots...they gave us little tiny dental cups without spoons (unless the table was nice enough to provide you with a spoon) to taste test] to really fill you up...it's rather amazing!
  4. No matter how many times you ask my beloved brother-in-law if we need utensils (primarily a ladle) and he says no, still bring one!  Love you, BK!  :)  [Side note: he did make a dang good chili though so I can't discredit him too much!]
A few pictures from the event:
Our set-up...it was more elaborate before we moved tables, but it worked!
Boon taking a break!
Me dressed as the weatherman predicted...a.k.a. NOT for August!
Haha...not sure what is going on in this picture, but I thought it was classic!

Snapshot of the crowd!

More of the crowd!
We finished off the night with a little Kris Gordon at the Rattle Inn!  Our friend, Donny, is in the band so we try to make all the local shows.  They are seriously so good though!!!  Two of my new favorite songs are The Upside of Down (click here to listen and check out his website or here to watch the video) and When You Close Your Eyes!!   If you haven't heard them yet, you are missing out...stop everything right now and go listen!!

Good bye, Vanilla Chai. Hello, Lent.

Well, it's that time of year again when most Catholics (practicing or not) and even some non-Catholics decide to give up their most valued obsessions or some habit of sin all for the Lenten season.   I'm not sure what got into me this year, but for some odd reason I decided to go all out....and, ahem, I'm totally failing.

We are only a week into it and I've already broke all but one of my sacrifices...this is killing me!

When I say "all out", I mean "ALL OUT"!   Call it growing up; call it guilt; call it I must really be in need of God's help; call it sucking up, but whatever you call it I obviously have overshot my abilities!  Let me describe... so for this year, my Lenten sacrifices include:

Giving up swearing:  Which I don't really do a whole lot or at least not on a consistently bad basis, but every now and then a poor-choice word slips out of my mouth.   I give this up every year though so I figured why not this year too!  If nothing else, "giving up" swearing at least makes me more aware of when I do swear so that has to be good, right?!  I mean, awareness is the first step in most healing processes...I think!
Tally: Lent 0, Failure 1

Giving up texting and checking facebook while driving:  Ok...I hate to admit it, but totally do it and pretend that I don't.  My excuse (ahem, a really good one btw) is that I sit in traffic for over an hour round trip and so I get really bored!  Usually, I end up saying to myself that I'll just read/write a text or check facebook while I'm at a complete stop in the middle of the highway with 100% intentions to stop as soon as I start driving again.  BUT...then I'm usually smack dab in the middle of something and no matter how hard I try to wait to finish until I stop again, I just can't!
Tally:  Lent 0, Failure 2

Giving up being negative at work:  Why I even attempted this one is beyond me!  The way things are going right now and the fact that everybody, literally everybody, is negative at work right now I seriously just set myself up for failure.
Tally:  Lent 0, Failure 3

Giving up my all-so-cherished vanilla chai lattes from Starbucks:  Alright, this sacrifice is the one that is by far the hardest for me, but I am proud to say that it is also the one that I have not failed at!  Wahoo, go me!!!  But, that doesn't mean things have gone smoothly for me...

First, this week I decided to make a very good effort to be to work on time (7:30 a.m.)...and by "I decided" I mean "my boss said we had to be to work on time this week"...and so I've been having to get out of my wonderfully, comfortable bed even earlier in the mornings which in turn means I'm even more tired than usual.  In fact, this morning I was so tired that despite that I've been shaving my legs for ohhhhh say 18 years or so of my life, I somehow happened to shave right over my finger and took a chunk out of my fingernail!  Ouch!
I'm only telling you this because any other time of year if I were this tired, I'd be all over a vanilla chai...even if it made me late to work to stop by Starbucks and grab one!  Not to mention, now my finger hurts and you never really realize how much you use one particular finger until you get a sharp shooting pain in it every time you use it....and just for that I think I deserve a vanilla chai for my pain and suffering!  Awe, Lent!

Second, playing off the fact that I'm getting up earlier, and therefore, extremely tired when I get to work at 7:30 a.m. with no vanilla chai to help me, I've ended up indulging in a cup of coffee every morning.  Yuck!!!  And not only do I NOT like coffee, the coffee at work is so strong I'm pretty sure you could get a caffeine-high just from smelling it so I'm sure you can only imagine how it tastes.  To try and mask this wonderful taste, I end up using 7-8 (sometimes more) of these little creamers:
Although these little creamers have been a lifesaver, I'm sure they can't be that healthy for you! So now not only have I picked up an even worse (read: more caffeinated, and therefore, probably more addicting) habit than drinking vanilla chai, but they are also probably way more fattening than my "nonfat" vanilla chai.

So to sum this sacrifice up - my success has definitely helped my tally some, but overall I've probably just made things worse for myself.  (We aren't going to count that though, so....)
Tally:  Lent 1, Failure 3

Joining a bible study:  Ok...and last, but not least...just to bump up the tally a little more...I also decided to take on one thing for Lent this year.  I decided to join a bible study. This one I also am doing!  So I guess that makes two of my "commitments"  (we will call them since this one doesn't qualify as a sacrifice) not yet broken!
Tally:  Lent 2, Failure 3

Only 5 weeks and 3 days to go.  Oh, gosh, wish me luck!
